Breedon Aggregates - Supplier of gravel (Olympic Village) to the London 2012 Games

It was July 2007 when we received our first enquiry into the suitability of Breedon Golden Amber self-binding gravel for use as a durable, yet natural finish for footpaths and various proposed concourse areas at the Olympic Park development for the London 2012 games.

The London Development Agency had delivered the land needed to accommodate the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Olympic Delivery Authority was responsible for the design and construction of the venues, structures, bridges and highways as well as logistics and security.

Obviously for such a prestigious development it was vital that high quality products were used to deliver the performance required to cope with the vast number of visitors.

In March 2010 we supplied 10 tonnes of our Breedon Golden Amber Gravel for a trial area of our material against other self-binding gravels to compare the overall look, texture, performance and colour. The client decided to use Breedon Golden Amber Gravel for the footpaths in the gardens and park areas around the Athlete’s Village and on the main walkway from the village through to the stadiums to allow the athletes easy access to the games venues.

Between 2007 and 2011 we received 19 requests for quotations from contractors who were tendering to carry out the landscaping works, but it was Volker Fitzpatrick who secured the contract and between July 2011 and December 2011 we delivered over 400 tonnes of Breedon Golden Amber gravel to the Athletes Village development.

Over 15,000 athletes took part in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games and the Athletes Village provided homes and places for the athlete’s to relax and enjoy some leisure time in the gardens and parkland areas. Our Breedon gravel will continue to provide an aesthetically pleasing and very durable pathway solution for the new residents of the Olympic development to enjoy for many years to come.
