The beautiful Ness gardens were originally founded by Arthur Kilpin Bulley, a Liverpool cotton merchant with a passion for gardens and for plant collecting in 1898. As his love of plants grew, he was recognised as one of the greatest sponsors of plant collectors of the twentieth century. Sometime after he passed away, the gardens were donated by his daughter Louis Bulley to the University of Liverpool in 1948
The award-winning Ness gardens situated in Neston, the Wirral span some 64 acres, housing a whole host of unusual and exotic plants from around the world. In addition to winning the Sustainable Tourism Award in 2014, Ness Botanic Gardens also received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.
The Making Waves garden at Ness was designed by talented garden designer Pip Probert and is sponsored by Friends of Ness Gardens. Pip has won Gold, Silver and Silver Gilt medals at RHS Tatton Park Show, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, RHS Malvern Flower Show and BBC/RHS Gardeners World Live.
The garden features a central pond surrounded by a decked area and a Breedon Golden Amber gravel path which leads to a seating area. You will see from the design where the name “Making Waves” came from, the golden pathways together with the vibrant, green grass are wonderfully curved and sweep throughout the garden effortlessly. The concept behind the design is that the garden can be properly “seen” from all directions. To promote the Making Waves garden at Ness Pip and her team built “A Taste of Ness” at RHS Tatton Park.
By selecting our hard-wearing Breedon gravel for the footpaths, the pathways remain durable, usable all year round and are accessible to all but are also “in-keeping” with the aesthetics and values of the design, without the need to use more harsh paving solutions.
