Our Breedon Golden Amber gravel was the product of choice by award winning garden designers and has been used extensively throughout the 154 acre site in transforming Worsley New Hall in Greater Manchester.
Worsley New Hall was built for the 1st Earl of Ellesmere in the 1840’s and stood within its fantastic grounds which were landscaped over a 50 year period. Such was this remarkable residence it warranted visits from Queen Victoria and latterly King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
During the First World War Worseley New Hall became a British Red Cross hospital but afterwards fell into disrepair and sadly, following a fire in 1943, it was demolished.
The RHS were granted full planning permission in 2017 of the 154 acre site, where their visions of what they hoped to achieve could start to become a reality. Ideas of how each part of the grounds could be redeveloped to benefit the community were brought to life by a team of award winning landscape architects – lead by Tom Stuart-Smith, designers, gardeners and contractors. With their vision and determination and with the help of many volunteers the largest gardening project in Europe began to take shape.
There are many separate areas to explore, the golden Breedon self-binding footpaths can be seen in almost all of them. We have sponsored benches within the Welcome Garden, the Paradise Garden and the Weston Walled Garden where you can take a seat and enjoy your surroundings.
Prior to securing the contract the contractor was asked to lay “test panels” of various self-binding materials so that the client could see how they performed over a period of time. Breedon Golden Amber Gravel was the high quality, aesthetically pleasing choice! We began delivering Breedon Gravel in 20t loads mid 2019 to A E Yates Limited, who expertly installed the self-binding gravel, following our installation guide perfectly to ensure that it gives its optimum performance over the coming years. We have supplied in excess of 800 tonnes of our Derbyshire hard limestone to the project in total and we couldn’t be prouder to have played a part in the transformation of this historic site into an interesting and vibrant place to visit for future generations.
RHS Garden Bridgewater will be the fifth garden to join the RHS’ current portfolio of gardens at Wisley in Surrey, Rosemoor in Devon, Hyde Hall in Essex and Harlow Carr in Yorkshire.
RHS Bridgewater is set to open its monumental new Garden in the heart of the North West in May 2021 and we can’t wait to revisit!
