FAQ

To calculate how much gravel you need, measure the area using Length × Width × Depth and then use our Gravel Calculator for an accurate estimate.

As a general guide:

  • 1 tonne of gravel covers approximately 14m² at a 40mm depth
  • 1 tonne of gravel covers approximately 12m² at a 50mm depth
  • 1 tonne of Breedon Golden Amber Gravel covers around 8m² at its 50mm compacted depth

These coverage rates help ensure you order the right amount for paths, driveways, and general landscaping projects.

For most projects, decorative gravel should be laid at a depth of 40–50mm to ensure good coverage, stability, and long-lasting performance.

This depth works well for garden borders, pathways, and general landscaping, helping the gravel stay in place while providing an even, attractive finish.

Decorative gravel can significantly help reduce and suppress weed growth, especially when installed over a high-quality weed membrane. However, it won’t eliminate weeds entirely, as some may still appear over time due to windblown seeds or organic debris settling on the surface.

For best results, we recommend using water-based weed or algae treatments as needed to keep your gravel areas looking clean and well-maintained.

While not strictly required, using a weed control membrane under decorative gravel is highly recommended. It helps suppress weed growth, keeps your gravel surface clean and tidy, and reduces the need for frequent maintenance.

For best results, we recommend using a weed membrane below the Type I sub base and installing your gravel of choice directly onto the Type I. Treat any persistent weeds with safe, water-based weed killers.

Proper maintenance helps keep your decorative gravel looking neat and long-lasting. Key steps include:

- Rake occasionally to redistribute stones evenly and prevent bare patches

- Top up annually if the gravel layer has thinned or settled

- Spot-treat weeds as needed using water-based or safe weed treatments

Regular upkeep ensures your gravel surfaces remain attractive, safe, and functional for years.

Breedon Golden Amber Gravel is the ultimate self-binding gravel solution for creating perfect pathways and driveways, and it is the only self-binding gravel to hold The Royal Warrant.

Made from 100% natural hard limestone, Breedon Golden Amber Gravel is crushed and graded from 12mm down to dust, with a high natural content of light marl. This unique marl content gives the gravel its exceptional self-binding properties, helping it form a firm, stable surface when laid correctly.

Unlike many other decorative gravel alternatives, the hard-wearing limestone from Breedon Quarry is non-frost susceptible, ensuring that your pathways and driveways remain stable during winter months. Other self-binding gravels can become saturated and slippery, leading to surface breakdown and making areas unsafe or unusable. Breedon Golden Amber Gravel provides a durable, natural surface suitable for year-round use.

Breedon Golden Amber Gravel is a 100% natural, self-binding limestone crushed and graded from 12mm down to dust, with no supplementary binders or additives.

When first laid, it provides a uniform, bound surface that is stable and visually consistent. Over time, with normal use and weathering, the top layer will scarify, creating a loose decorative dressing of chippings that provides the classic “gravel crunch” while the underlying surface remains firm and bound.

We aim to showcase our decorative aggregates as accurately as possible, using a range of images taken in different weather and lighting conditions.

However, colours may vary slightly due to several factors, including lighting, moisture levels, natural variation in the stone, the camera used to take the photo, and the screen settings (such as brightness or colour calibration) on the device you’re viewing the website with. Decorative aggregates can also look noticeably different when wet compared to dry.

To ensure you’re completely confident in your choice, we always recommend ordering a FREE sample, allowing you to see the exact colour, texture, and finish in person before placing a full order.
