Breedon’s Royal Warrant-backed self-binding gravel continues to deliver a premium long-lasting solution for the National Trust

From cycle tracks at Calke Abbey to the gardens and maze at Cliveden Estate to Powis Castle footpaths, Breedon Golden Amber Gravel helps the National Trust to preserve historic landscapes while making them accessible for everyone.
Breedon’s Golden Amber Gravel is a natural material that blends seamlessly with historic estates. Its consistent soft natural warm golden tones complement the surroundings, while its durable wheelchair-friendly surface ensures safe access for all visitors. Frost resistant and hard-wearing, it performs year-round in high-footfall areas making it perfect for National Trust properties that welcome thousands of visitors daily.
Preserving timeless charm while improving visitor pathways
Calke Abbey in Derbyshire is a rare example of a country house preserved in a state of gentle decline. Its peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards have become part of its unique charm. When the Trust sought to enhance the pathways for visitors without disturbing this carefully maintained character, Breedon Golden Amber Gravel was the perfect solution.
When developing Calke Explore, a new outdoor hub designed to encourage more time outdoors, the Trust laid a further 200 tonnes of gravel to form an extensive network of walking and cycling routes. These paths provide a stable surface for pedestrians, cyclists, buggies, and wheelchairs, while continuing to preserve the estate’s historic character.
Caroline Taylor, Visitor Experience Manager at Calke Abbey, explains: “Breedon Golden Amber Gravel is most effective on our key visitor routes, which experience heavy footfall. It remains safe and durable for thousands of feet, wheelchairs, buggies and mobility scooters, while its colour complements our conservation priorities and supports Calke’s spirit of place.”
Perfect pathways for high footfall estate across gardens and iconic maze
Cliveden Estate in Buckinghamshire welcomes over 550,000 visitors annually and is one of the Trust’s most popular properties. Famous for its grand gardens, Breedon Golden Amber Gravel was the clear choice when they needed to upgrade the pathways around the estate.
A highlight of the project was the reinstatement of Cliveden’s maze. Featuring 500 metres of golden passages, the maze is enjoyed by thousands of people all year round and required a durable surface that could be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Breedon’s Golden Amber Gravel was the obvious choice, with its consistent colour, wheelchair- and buggy-friendly finish and reliable frost-resistance.
Durable access routes for a year round visitor destination
Built in the thirteenth century as a medieval fortress Powis Castle in Welsh Pool is now run by the National Trust. Open to public year-round it’s essential the pathways are usable and accessible, whatever the weather. Breedon Golden Amber gravel was selected as the material of choice due to its durability under high footfall and consistent, natural buff tone, which blends seamlessly with the castle’s architecture and gardens.
Breedon Golden Amber Gravel is a high quality self-binding gravel and the only one to hold the Royal Warrant. Its versatility makes it ideal for both traditional and contemporary settings, delivering a hard-wearing, frost-resistant surface that performs all year round.
