Breedon Wayfarer is a graded 6mm to dust limestone material with self-binding properties providing stability with great versatility.

Breedon Wayfarer has been produced here at Breedon Quarry for many years.

Today, due to production process changes, Wayfarer is available solely for the maintenance of existing contracts and for smaller projects.

For larger contract requirements please view our Breedon Golden Amber self-binding gravel pages or get in touch with our dedicated sales team.

The approximate coverage is 10m2 per tonne. It is recommended that Wayfarer is laid at a finished compacted thickness of 40mm.

Breedon Wayfarer is a graded 6mm to fines natural limestone which has a high content of marl, giving Wayfarer great self setting stability and versatility used for many leisure uses:-

  • footpaths
  • cycleways
  • canal towpaths
  • bridleways
  • golf courses
  • petanque pistes
  • BMX tracks

The fundamental difference between Wayfarer and Breedon Golden Amber is that Wayfarer is not suitable for vehicular use. Wayfarer will provide a sturdy base which knits together when compacted in accordance with our laying instructions.  This gives a surface which self-scarifies with use, making it an attractive, natural and environmentally friendly surface that delivers exceptional resilience.  Please note that Wayfarer self-binding gravel is not free draining and requires a cross fall or camber to shed water from its surface into adequate drainage.

Please note that our Wayfarer must be installed in an identical manner to our Breedon Golden Amber Gravel – the ONLY difference being that it must be laid to a finished compacted thickness of 40mm (50mm with Breedon Golden Amber Gravel) – all other processes remain the same.

Wayfarer is a non-frost susceptible hard limestone, meaning, when laid in accordance with our laying instructions, it will not turn to slurry over the winter months.

Based on our recommended finished compacted thickness of 40mm you can expect to get 10m2 per tonne laid.

Wayfarer must not be laid flat, it is not a free-draining material and so must be laid to a fall or a camber in order to shed rainfall to its sides. In large areas it advisable to install adequate drainage to assist surface water to drain from the area efficiently. The first point of drainage MUST be no further than 5 metres and repeated as necessary, this is to avoid the possible penetration of standing surface water into the surface.

Due to its purely natural properties Wayfarer cannot be laid on slopes where the gradient of fall is steeper than 1 in 15 metres.

This material requires approximately 5 gallons of water for every tonne of material that is laidAdequate water must be applied to ensure the fines within our product are floated sufficiently to allow the surface to harden and latterly dry through.

The whole laying process must be completed in the same day.  For large areas it is advisable to split the area into sections. Newly laid areas can be “butted up” next to previously laid material provided that a neat edge is used. When floating the fines up to the surface in the adjoining sections simply pull a soft broom over the surface to infill the fines over the join, this will provide a smooth and more unified appearance.

In addition to our laying instructions please see below further useful advice:-

  • Level the material using the back of a rake to avoid separating the fines from the coarse aggregate
  • Once fully compacted and when water rolling the material, use a soft broom over the surface to fill in any open textured/coarse areas. This will ensure a uniform appearance is achieved throughout the entire surface.
  • When water rolling, a flood of water must push forward in front of the roller. You will almost always need to direct a hose onto the drum of the roller in addition to that being expelled from the roller.
  • Once a wet, shiny surface is achieved (similar to the appearance when floating concrete) the product has sufficient water to begin the binding process.
  • We advise a drying through period of 1 to 2 weeks in good dry weather, we would advise that during the drying process the area is not used.

On smaller areas a vibrating/compacting plate can be used, however it is more labour intensive to get sufficient water into the product. A hose with a fine mist can be attached to the plate or held and sprayed repeatedly across the area, it will take many passes to achieve the above mentioned “wet, shiny surface” – perseverance is key in order for the material to perform.

❄ Please note that in Winter months our material should not be installed during a period when temperatures are forecast to be below freezing. This is due to the large quantity of water required when correctly laying our material to avoid the expansion of the water within the product as it freezes.

☀ Please check the moisture content of your material prior to use, particularly in prolonged dry conditions or if the product has been stockpiled. The material should have a moisture content which, when squeezed by hand, hold its form. If the material appears to be very dry, we advise the bulk bag or stockpile is sprayed using a hose with a FINE MIST and turned over until you achieve the necessary consistency – (Do not jet water onto the material as binding fines will be washed away from the product – which will inhibit the binding process.)

Delivery

Our primary method of delivery offered when delivering bulk bags will be made kerbside using a tail-lift lorry and manual pump truck - similar to when taking delivery of white goods for example. The pallets will be placed as near as possible to where you need them. The ground and road must be level and solid to meet the carriers requirements.  Broken concrete, grass, gravel or sloping ground is unsuitable and pallets may only be left on the roadside at the drivers discretion if deemed safe to do so.

Please also note that the average size of a delivery vehicle is an 18 tonne lorry which is similar in size to a refuse collection vehicle.

Alternatively, if this cost-effective method of delivery is unsuitable, bagged deliveries can be made using one of our crane off-load vehicles. This allows bulk bags to be ‘lifted’ into position if access is difficult or craned over walls and fences within reach. Please note that for small quantities of bulk bags the crane off-load service is likely to incur a considerable delivery cost increase.

Additionally, if you require 10 bulk bags or more please do get in touch as it is highly likely that we can offer an advantageous delivered price for you.

For any requirement outside of the primary method of delivery or for larger quantities please click here with your details and we will be in touch shortly with your delivered price, or call our sales team on 01332 694001.
